AMENITY & TURF GRASS
Grass seed mixtures for amenity areas are formulated with many
different factors in mind. Compactness of the sward, ability to stand hard wear,
short growth to facilitate low maintenance, freedom from disease, Winter and
Summer greenness and tolerance to mowing and poaching are but a few factors
taken into consideration. Soil type and management also play a part.
Our policy is to offer mixtures which contain only the very best varieties
commercially available , and these represent very good value for money. We feel
that we have a formula for every need , be it ornamental or for parks, domestic
lawns, bowling and putting greens, cricket squares, tennis courts, rugby and
football pitches, golf fairways and greens, grass verges, banks or shady areas.
The following list covers the most popular varieties however we have many more
specific-use mixes available and can tailor-make a mix to your exact
requirements. Please contact us to discuss your needs.
Browntop (Agrostis tenuis)
This grass is often described as Highland Bent or Common Bent. It is a fine grass which has an aggressive habit and rapid establishment, and stands up to close mowing. The seed is very small indeed, with approximately 9,000 seeds per gram compared with ryegrass at approximately 600 seeds per gram, hence Browntop is usually only a small percentage by weight in any mixture.
Chewings Fescue (Festuca rubra commutata)
This is an excellent fescue for low maintenance amenity turf, easy to establish and recovers well from mowing. It combines well with other fine grasses, maintaining a good colour throughout the year.
Creeping Red Fescue (Festuca rubra rubra)
A high percentage is used in many of our mixtures as it thrives on a wide range of soil types, grows well with other grass species and is resistant to drought and both high and low temperatures. Whilst slightly coarser than Chewings Fescue it’s creeping habit makes it very valuable for binding the sward.
Slender Creeping Red Fescue (Festuca rubra litoralis)
Has good stress resistance and maintains its colour in poor situations.
Perennial Ryegrass (Lolium perenne)
There are many varieties available and we are currently offering Danilo for Sports use and Chapparal for Landscape use. We also have some other varieties available and for large orders may be able to source and quote alternative varieties.
Smooth Stalked Meadow Grass (Poa pratensis)
Often described as Kentucky Bluegrass, it is an excellent grass for sports fields and turf production as it is able to withstand considerable wear and tear. It is deeprooted, and spreads by means of underground stems. It is drought tolerant and very responsive to high levels of management.
FOR GENERAL GUIDANCE SOWING RATES
Mixtures without ryegrass, 20-35g. per sq mt (1-1.5 oz per sq
yard)
Mixtures with ryegrass, 45-53g. per sq mt (2-2.5 oz per sq yard)
Seed should be sown in a firm seed bed which is clear of weeds and weed seed, and which has been raked to a fine tilth. Drainage must be attended to where necessary, and on heavy land the surface should be made sufficiently porous to prevent water logging. Sow sufficient seed as a high seeding often gives an uneven appearance for some time. Incorporate a suitable fertilizer into the topsoil so as to give rapid growth and quick establishment.
FOR SPORTS AREAS WE RECOMMEND 125kg – 250kg per Hectare (50kg – 100kg per Acre).
For renovation and patching use half the above recommended rates.
1 acre = 4840 square yards = 4047 square metres
